Shastal sent the following note to Laingsburg parents at around 4pm on Wednesday:

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I just received word from the Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Department that a current off-campus/online high school student has been arrested for making threats against the school. This individual has no access to campus and is attempting to finish graduation credits online.

This individual is in police custody and poses no threat to our schools at this time. It is my understanding that the student in question shared some strange and disturbing messages through social media to a fellow high school student. To our knowledge, there were no specific threats made to any particular student, staff member, or school building. Regardless, we live in difficult and challenging times and we applaud the Sheriff’s department for taking even non-specific messages very seriously.

Currently, law enforcement is not recommending we take any action tomorrow such as a lockdown, or any changes to our school day, so we will proceed with school on Thursday as planned.

We will update you with any relevant information we can share under federal privacy laws as we receive it.

As always, we take the safety of our students, staff, and school buildings extremely seriously. We wanted to give you all the information we could under federal privacy law in a timely fashion and in the interest of transparency and preventing any unfounded rumors before they might start—a big concern in this day and age.

Please talk with your child and empower them to notice things that may seem out of place and share the information with a trusted adult. Michigan has a toll-free website and mobile app to report tips as well. Please consider using OK2SAY and encourage your child to do the same. To report a concern, please call 1-855-565-2729, text 652729, email ok2say@mi.gov, or visit their website at www.mi.gov/ok2say.

Matt
