Smile FM is a network of non-profit radio stations that stretches from Detroit to Marquette; more than 30 stations cover nearly every part of the state.  It all began in Lansing in 1996 with a single station known then as "88.1 The Light."

Today, the Smile FM Radio Network plays "Michigan's Positive Hits," and the morning show, heard across all 30-plus stations, is hosted by 1998 Durand graduate and Perry Pulse Publisher, Josh Strickland.  The show is broadcast each day from a studio in Durand.  Today, Smile FM can be heard in Perry on 88.1.

The organization has been able to increase its coverage through the years, adding new stations and cranking up the power on existing stations, thanks to generous listener support.  As Smile FM is a non-profit organization and its stations are licensed by the Federal Communications Commission as "non-commercial," the stations are not legally able to sell radio advertising.  Instead, the stations must be supported by donations.  This also means that except for the occasional concert or event announcement, or "thank you" to a local business for its support, generally lasting less than 60 seconds, listeners hear only positive hit music and chatter from Smile FM's on air personalities.

However, beginning Monday, there will be a little different vibe.

While throughout most of the year, it's "business as usual," playing positive hits and hosting events that help fulfill Smile FM's mission of "Building Families, Touching Hearts & Changing Lives," for one week in the fall, Smile FM hosts "Fun Drive."  Fun Drive is time the non-profit sets aside for a heavy fundraising push.  Fall Fun Drive begins Monday, September 24th.

This week, listeners will be asked frequently to consider supporting the organization; a ministry that aims to deliver hope and encouragement to people every day.  To remind supporters of the value of their financial gifts, which average around $40 monthly, personalities will share stories from listeners  Listeners will also be invited to share stories about how their lives have been positively impacted by listening to Smile FM.

While delivering on their mission of Building Families, Touching Hearts & Changing Lives is the priority, Smile FM also points to its support of community events and initiatives and the on air services it provides, like local news, traffic and weather reports, including its exclusive "FirstWarn" technology, which speeds severe weather information to listeners even faster than the traditional Emergency Alert System that most stations use, as even more reasons to consider making a contribution.

For three weeks, Strickland traveled the state on the Smile Everywhere Summer Tour, visiting 36 communities throughout Michigan and meeting dozens of listeners.  While the tour did not include stops in Shiawassee County, Smile FM did participate in events in both Lennon and Byron this summer, and the station has promoted numerous recent events in Shiawassee County.

Non-profit events can be posted for free on the station's "Family Fun Calendar" at its website, Smile.fm.

Donate online anytime at Smile.fm/Donate or, beginning Monday, call 888-887-7139.
