The Michigan Cannabis Industry Association (MiCIA) issued a statement on Friday supporting the Whitmer administration’s rule banning the use of vitamin E acetate in vaping cartridges. The move comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have identified the substance as the most likely culprit in a spate of recent lung injuries related to vaping.

“We’re fully supportive of the Governor’s decision,” said Robin Schneider, Executive Director of the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association. “Our member’s No. 1 priority is providing safe, tested medicine to medical marijuana patients across the state, we think this will contribute significantly towards that goal.”

This move will also ensure that cannabis vaping products being manufactured for use in the rollout of the adult-use recreational market in Michigan will be tested and safe along the new guidelines and safety standards.

“While we think this is a necessary and critical provision, we urge the state to uphold that same decision-making standard and commitment to patient health by reversing its shortsighted and sudden decision to allow medical supply to be transitioned to the recreational market,” Schneider added.

Earlier this month the state made an abrupt rule change allowing for companies to shift 50 percent of their medical supply to the recreational market. Many MiCIA members have decried the decision, saying it will exacerbate the shortage already present in the medical market.
