Shiawassee County is pleased to introduce GIS to its residents. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a framework used to gather, manage and analyze data in a visual way. This framework is designed to help County departments, private entity partners and citizens improve our community. With the Geographic Information System, county officials can tell what has happened, what is happening, and what may happen within a geographic space. It has numerous mapping layers including parcels, topography, aerial imagery, soils, school districts, voting districts, etc. The County is continuously updating the parcel layers and tax information to ensure the most accurate data is available to the public. “We are pleased to present GIS to our residents and move Shiawassee County forward in the 21st Century” says Larry Johnson, Health Director. County departments instrumental in developing the project include the Health Department, Drain Commission, Register of Deeds, Equalization and the Board of Commissioners. The County contracted with Amalgam, LLC. to develop the GIS platform and maintain parcel data.

County departments will be using GIS to translate and analyze data in real time. “GIS will provide our citizens easier access to public information and numerous features that can be used on a daily basis” says Tony Newman, Shiawassee County Drain Commissioner. Access to GIS is free and available to the public on the County website at http://www.shiawassee.net/GIS/. More data layers will be added in the future. Maps are available for purchase through the Shiawassee County Drain Office. Initial funding support for the project was provided by the Shiawassee Register of Deeds, Lori Kimble.
