Significant Heat Ahead: Prepare Now

Heat Indices Could Top 100 Degrees In Coming Days

Rising heat and humidity in the coming days presents the hazard for both heat-related illnesses as well as more severe weather.

Forecasters are doubling down on predictions that heat indices will top 100 degrees -- maybe rising as high as 110 degrees, especially on Friday. Excessive, dangerous heat will stick with us into the weekend.

Watch for the signs and know the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. One of the big differences is the symptom of sweat. When suffering from heat exhaustion, one will sweat excessively, whereas, a person suffering heat stroke will not sweat. Heat exhaustion may make one feel dizzy or faint, while a symptom of heat stroke is a throbbing headache.

If you believe you or someone else may be suffering from heat exhaustion, seek an air conditioned space or take a cool shower to cool off. If you believe you or someone else may be suffering from heat stroke, call 911 immediately.

A person suffering from either heat exhaustion or heat stroke may experience nausea and vomiting.

Work to stay safe and healthy by staying hydrated. Also, remember to check on elderly friends, family and neighbors, as well as those with very young children.
