2017 Alma Grad Recognized for Undergraduate Paper

On March 9, 2018, Jessica Bigelow of Perry, Michigan and a 2017 graduate of Alma University, received the Kapp Award for the most outstanding undergraduate paper presented at the 2017 Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters Conference. Ms. Bigelow, an English major, presented a paper entitled Coded cohesion from sin to salvation: narratology and structuralism in the plays of the Wakefield Master in the Academy’s Language and Literature section. She received the Kapp Prize’s $100 honorarium and recognition at this year’s Michigan Academy luncheon.

The grounds of Perry City Hall were filled with eager Easter egg hunters on Saturday morning. The annual hunt is organized by Perry Baptist Church and, in addition to 10,000 eggs, also featured a presentation for kids that shared the story of Jesus' death and resurrection. Governor Snyder is releasing a new school safety plan, recommending that the state spend 20-million-dollars to upgrade school security. Snyder's plan includes 18 initiatives such as strengthening buildings with better lock systems.

Former Olympian and Michigan resident Desiree Linden has become the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon in 33 years. Linden finished with an unofficial time of two-hours, 39-minutes and 54-seconds.  

A nationwide E. coli outbreak is affecting Michigan. CDC officials say 35 people across the country were sickened after eating contaminated romaine lettuce. At least one of the victims is a Michigan resident.  

Authorities in Baldwin are identifying a woman who was struck and killed by a car over the weekend. They say Christina Lynn Kunna was walking in traffic on U.S. 10 Saturday when she was hit and pronounced dead at the scene.   

A 23-year-old River Rouge man is facing charges of impersonating a police officer. Blake Purvis was arraigned Monday on the misdemeanor charge for allegedly stopping a car carrying two men who turned out to be members of a police community patrol group.   

A job fair is being held in Flint today to fill more than 75 manufacturing positions. The unnamed company is a Tier 1 Defense and aerospace manufacturer. The job fair will be held at the Dort Federal Event Center in Flint from 2 – 7 p.m. 

Police said they've caught three vandals who shot up vehicles and houses with a slingshot and marbles last week in southern Ionia County and northern Barry County. The incidents happened April 11 and April 12. 

Crews with the City of Manistee continue to assess damages left by a weather phenomenon called a seiche. Officials say it happened during Friday's storm, it’s caused by extreme high or low pressure which causes sudden changes in water levels.
