Anhydrous ammonia began leaking from a tank at the intersection of State and Bennington roads, northwest of Bancroft,  after the truck pulling it and the trailer it was on jackknifed at around 9:30 on Wednesday morning.  The farmer behind the wheel told authorities the brakes failed on the truck.  He then made an abrupt turn at the intersection.  That's when the accident occurred, causing the tank to overturn.  The leak was the result of a pressure release valve that broke in the crash.

Some nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution and a HAZMAT team was activated by Ingham County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Shiawassee County Sheriff Brian BeGole told Perry Pulse just after 1pm that the tank had been sealed and was being uprighted to be loaded back on to the trailer.

The roadway is expected to be closed into the mid-afternoon hours.  Authorities are still asking drivers to avoid the area.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls anhydrous ammonia a pungent gas with suffocating fumes.  It is commonly used as fertilizer.
